I was delighted to hear via the Free Press that USM's Faculty Senate has unanimously voted to endorse the work-to-rule motion from the Affiliated Faculties of the Universities of Maine.
The endorsement by the Faculty Senate is a key step in securing contracts for faculty that have gone two years without a contract. The Board of Trustees has stalled on approving these contracts in opposition to including cost-of-living raises.
My personal opinion on the matter is based on the idea that students and faculty are the core of this university. The university is nothing without them and it is appalling that the Board of Trustees would succumb to the trend of underpaying our educators. Our professors and educators, who were students at one point in time, invested time, energy, and money so that they can provide us an education. It's time that we invest in them too.
With that said, the Faculty have taken a stand. I will stand with them.
