Gender Neutral Amendments to SGA Constitution Adopted by Student Senate
Portland, ME, March 1st, 2013 - Student Senator Marpheen Chann's proposal to amend the SGA Constitution so as to comply with current trends and community standards in regards to gender neutrality was passed unanimously today by the Senate. The Constitutional Review Committee, chaired by Senator Joshua Dodge, is now in the process of reviewing and implementing the amendments.
"... The proposal is both symbolic and practical. Symbolic in that it sends a message to the student body that the Student Senate is all inclusive and practical in that it rids us of any future conflicts that may arise in regards to gender identification." - Marpheen Chann, Student Senator
The amendments were adopted after the rules were suspended in regards to Constitutional amendments, following a debate on whether or not to table the proposal to fulfill constitutional requirements. The motion to table the proposal ended in a tie with six senators for and six opposed, with the tie breaking vote casted by Student Senate Chair Chris Camire. The vote on the proposal followed soon thereafter and was adopted unanimously by the Senate.
"I'm glad to provide a welcoming environment for students of all walks of life in the Student Government. We welcome any and all students to join our efforts, regardless of gender identity." - Chris Camire, Chair of the Student Senate
Sarah Holmes, the Director of Student Life and Diversity, was present to offer up testimony on the importance of the subject, stating that the usage of gender neutral pronouns are becoming increasingly accepted as substitutions for traditional pronouns.
Kelsea Dunham and Zachary Hammond, student officers from the Board of Student Organizations, were also present and supported the measure, stating that the BSO itself will initiate proceedings to make the BSO consitution more gender neutral and to require all student group constitutions, henceforth, to use gender neutral language.
Senator Chann is proud to be an advocate for gender neutrality and applauds the Student Senate for its support of amending the SGA constitution. He also is delighted that the BSO will be working to do the same and looks forward to seeing the trend spread to other SGA entities and organizations.
