Dear Portland Friends & Neighbors,
My name is Marpheen Chann and I am running for Portland City Council District 5 (Deering Center, North Deering, and Riverton).
Portland is facing many tough issues.
Our city is becoming less and less affordable. Higher housing costs are pushing young people, working families, and seniors and retirees out of their homes and out of the city. Our schools are underfunded by a state legislature that has broken its promises when it comes to revenue sharing and funding for education. And we need to decide what kind of city Portland is going to be in this time of great fear and uncertainty for immigrants, refugees and communities of color.
I am a first-generation Asian-American and a member of the LGBT community. I am a former foster kid and adopted son of a white, working class family. I've been lifted up by a good education, and lived the American dream.
I know how important it is to have a place to call home, and to have the means to put food on the table. I know the fear and uncertainty that communities of color, immigrants and refugees feel in these times. And I know the power that good schools and a good education have in transforming young people's lives.
That's why I'm running for city council—to make Portland a place for everyone.
